MAFS Technical Advisor for Food Security

Hon. Evans Kenyi Solomon is a seasoned agricultural expert and national food security specialist serving as Technical Advisor in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security (MAFS), a position he assumed in July 2025 through Presidential appointment. With nearly 40 years of experience spanning academia, government service, humanitarian operations, and national food security coordination, he is widely recognized for his leadership in strengthening agricultural systems in South Sudan.

Hon. Solomon played a pivotal role in establishing and operationalizing the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) in South Sudan, guiding national analyses from 2008 to 2016 through the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO). He further transformed crop monitoring nationwide by creating the first coordinated Crop and Food Security Assessment Mission (CFSAM) framework, deploying trained taskforces and County Crop Monitoring Committees (CCMCs) across 64 counties to generate reliable production and seasonal data used in national food security planning.

His earlier contributions include establishing the FAO Aweil Field Office, expanding ox-ploughing and seed systems, and managing key agricultural programmes through partnerships with national NGOs. Before joining FAO, he served with Tearfund as Food Security Sector Head in Aweil South during the Operation Lifeline Sudan period, introducing improved extension systems and grafted fruit tree production in some of the country’s most vulnerable communities.

Hon. Solomon began his career in academia, lecturing and later heading the Department of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Juba from 1997 to 2005. A graduate of Alexandria University (BSc Agriculture, 1986) and the University of Khartoum (MSc Agriculture, 1996), he has mentored many agricultural professionals who now serve in senior government positions.

Today, Hon. Solomon continues to support national agricultural policy, data systems, and resilience initiatives, contributing to South Sudan’s broader effort to strengthen food security and promote sustainable rural livelihoods.
