Directorate of Food Security Analysis And Communications
The Directorate of Food Security Analysis and Communications (FSAC) is one of the directorates of the National Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security of South Sudan, which is responsible for Food & Nutrition Security Analysis & Communications. The Directorate (FSAC) is mandated to conduct and participate in food & nutrition security surveys & assessment, acquire & manage data, coordinate food & nutrition security activities, publish food & nutrition security as end-user information inform of pamphlets, bulletins & reports; participate in food & nutrition security policy making & review; and advise the government on food & nutrition security issues including food insecurity and malnutrition across the country.
Functions of the Directorate
- Take lead and/or participate in food and nutrition security and vulnerability assessments, monitoring and analyses including the IPC carried out by the Government and/or its partners in South Sudan.
- To analyze the drivers of food insecurity, malnutrition and vulnerability including socio-economic factors, climate change impacts and policy gaps across the country.
- Collect, acquire, generate and analyze relevant data on food production and socioeconomic conditions affecting on-farm and agro-food industry operations.
- Participate in establishing and maintaining an up-to-date national database on total acreage, productivity and value of major food crops, livestock and fisheries production levels and activities across the country.
- Establish, operationalize and maintain an up-to-date and reliable national database on food and nutrition security and interventions by the government and its partners.
- To analyze geographic patterns of food and nutrition insecurity and vulnerability by integrating primary food and nutrition data with other sources of data in GIS environment.
- Take lead in developing a framework to compile, analyze, maintain and disseminate data on food and nutrition security to relevant stakeholders.
- Prepare and produce periodic key food and nutrition security information pamphlets, bulletins, reports and other identified forms or end user documents in the Ministry of agriculture and food security.
- Participate and provide technical guidance in the formulation, review and implementation of policies, legislation, regulation, standards, plans, strategies and designs on food and nutrition security analysis.
- To promote networking between professional bodies, research, private sector and other interested entities dealing with food and nutrition security information and analysis.
- Provide support and guidance, transfer skills and develop capacity building in relevant government institutions and other stakeholders including at sub-national levels in food and nutrition security analysis and information management and.
- Perform other related duties assigned by the leadership of MAFS.
Deng Deng AkueI received a Crop Production Agronomy degree from Alexandria University in Egypt in 2003, and he joined the Ministry of Agriculture & Food Security of South Sudan two years later. In 2005, he was assigned to the Aweil Rice Scheme as its Deputy Manager. He was promoted to scheme manager two years later, in 2007, and remained in that post until 2008, when he was relocated to the ministry headquarters in Juba and assigned to the Undersecretary’s office as a director.
In 2020, he was appointed Director General of the Directorate of Food Security Analysis and Communications, a position he has held ever since. As director general, he is focused on building the capacity of staff in their various fields, particularly hands-on training for field-based staff so that they can take stock of field operations, particularly food production, and provide analysis of land under cultivation, output, and measuring the metric tons of food produced and what is available in the market for easy communication with all stakeholders.
He has vast experience producing crops such as sorghum, maize, millet, groundnuts, and rice.
