Directorate of National Food Reserve
The Directorate of National Food Reserve within the National Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security is mandated to cater for all national food reserves activities. This directorate falls within the Food and Nutrition Sector of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, and it provides the overall policy and strategy development for the improvement of storage systems for preserving and maintaining an adequate food reserves for immediate, medium and future food needs across the country. The directorate coordinates with the states Ministries of Agriculture, Environment and Forestry in the implementation of planned activities.
Functions of the Directorate
- Promote and encourage the farmer’s production in the country.
- Create market access for produced food crops.
- Encourage farmers to produce nutritive valuable crops.
- Facilitate establishment of siloes and storage systems.
- Identify and capacitate quality control officers for better siloes and store management.
- Create conducive environment to expand storage systems, and market access locally and internationally.
Mary Benjamin Loki is currently serving as the Director General of the Directorate of the National Food Reserve. She graduated with a high diploma in general tropical agriculture from the Yambio Institute of Agriculture, where she had completed her studies between 1979 and 1980. Following her graduation, she joined the then ministry of agriculture in 1980 and served as the inspector of agriculture until the year 2000.
She left the ministry and enrolled at Kenyatta University of Technology, where she studied food processing between the years 2001 and 2004. After that, she went on to work in the humanitarian sector. In 2005, she returned to the ministry as the director for post-harvest, and she remained in that position until 2019, when she was promoted to the position of director general for the National Food Reserve, which she has held up until this point.
With the goal of addressing the shortage of food production in the country, she intends to broaden the scope of the national food reserve so that it can become an agency that is responsible for increasing food production
